On August 12 2016, PayPal Singapore launched our Innovation Lab, the first outside the US. The lab aims to foster innovation, research and development, entrepreneurship, talent and expertise in Singapore.
During the launch, we piloted at e-payment system at
Enbu Suntec – a Japanese-style grill Izakaya. This e-payment system is one of the first innovation projects released by the Innovation Lab.
Why do we need an e-payment system?
Why is the e-payment system an innovation? Well if you’ve been to any restaurant, you’ll know that wait staff spend a significant amount of time taking orders and facilitating payment. This means that they have less time to make recommendations on food, and may not be as attentive to their customers’ needs.
With the e-payment system, the process of calling for the bill is eliminated and payment can be immediate! Customers do not have to call the waiter for the bill, and there is no need to wait for the cashier to ring up the bill, and for the waiter to bring it back to them, and then wait again while the cashier processes the payment.
Beyond just making the dining process more enjoyable for customers, the e-payment system also improves productivity and efficiency for restaurants, allowing staff to focus on delivering more high-value service to customers.
Getting it just right
Since many customers may be wary of keying in their card details on a strange device, they have the option of choosing to pay with PayPal at Enbu. If they do, they simply have to enter their mobile number and they would be sent a payment link. The payment link facilitates a PayPal One-touch payment so customers do not have to key in their passwords again if they choose not to.
Enbu is the first restaurant at which this e-payment system is being piloted but we hope to see it being implemented at many more F&B outlets in the coming year, so look out for it!
